What a Goldendoodle actually is

A Goldendoodle is a Golden Retriever crossed with a Poodle. That is the whole of it. There is no ancient breed history, no kennel club standard, and anyone who tells you otherwise is decorating a simple thing.

What the cross does is combine two temperaments that happen to work well together. The Golden Retriever brings an uncomplicated, people-pleasing warmth — the reason it has been one of the world's favourite family dogs for a century. The Poodle brings a genuinely first-rate brain and a coat that sheds very little. Get the pairing right and you have a dog that is easy to live with, quick to train and leaves far less hair on your sofa than almost any other dog of its size.

Get it wrong and you have an expensive, badly bred dog with an unpredictable coat and health problems from both sides. The cross is not magic. The breeding is what matters, which is why we ask you to meet the mother rather than take our word for it.

You will see the breed written as golden doodle, two words, about as often as one. Same dog.

Generations: F1, F1B and why the letters matter

This is the part of buying a Goldendoodle that confuses most people in India, and it is the part that actually changes what you get.

We breed F1 and F1B. If shedding or a mild allergy in the household is what is driving your decision, the F1B is the one to look at — roughly three-quarters Poodle, with the curliest and lowest-shedding coat. If you would rather do a little less brushing and accept a little more hair, the F1 is the more forgiving dog.

We mostly do not breed F2 litters, because the coat results scatter so widely that a family buying on the promise of "low shedding" can end up with a dog that sheds like a Golden Retriever.

Size: how big does a Goldendoodle get?

Ours are bred from Standard Poodles, so expect a properly sized dog. A grown Goldendoodle from our lines typically stands 50 to 60 cm at the shoulder and weighs 20 to 30 kg — a big dog in an Indian flat, and one that needs a real walk rather than a turn around the corridor.

You will see Mini and Medium Goldendoodles advertised in India, bred down using Miniature or Toy Poodles. They exist and some are well bred. Be careful, though: "mini" is the most abused word in Indian dog sales, and a great many puppies sold as minis simply grow into medium dogs, to the considerable surprise of the family that bought one for a small flat.

The only reliable predictor of adult size is the parents. Meet them, or at least see them on video, and ask what the previous litter grew into. We will tell you honestly if we think a Standard-sized dog is wrong for your home.

The coat, shedding and the word "hypoallergenic"

No dog is hypoallergenic. Not a Goldendoodle, not a Poodle, not anything with hair. We will not tell you otherwise to close a sale.

What is true is this: most people who react to dogs are reacting to dander and saliva protein, which travel around a room on shed hair. A curly coat holds shed hair in the coat instead of dropping it. Less hair in the air means fewer symptoms. That effect is real, it is why allergy households ask for Goldendoodles, and it is why the F1B — the curliest generation — is the one they should be asking for.

But it is a reduction, not an elimination. If someone in your house has a serious dog allergy, come and spend an hour with our adult dogs before you commit to a decade with one. That hour costs you nothing and it is worth more than any promise we could put on a website.

Coat types you will see

Goldendoodle coats run from straight (rare, sheds most), through wavy (the common F1 result), to curly (typical of F1B). Wavy is the easiest to live with day to day. Curly sheds least but mats fastest. Neither is better; they suit different households.

Puppy coat is not adult coat. Most Goldendoodles go through a coat change somewhere between eight and fourteen months, when the soft puppy fluff is replaced by the adult texture. Matting is at its worst during that transition, and it catches out a great many first-time owners.

Colours in Indian litters

Colour does not change our price. It changes how long you wait.

If you have your heart set on one colour, tell us and we will be honest about the wait rather than putting you on a list for something that is not coming.

Temperament, and who this dog actually suits

Goldendoodles are sociable, biddable and clever. They learn fast, they read a room, and they bond hard to the household rather than to one person. For a family with children, or a first-time owner who wants a dog that meets them halfway, it is a genuinely forgiving breed.

The flip side is the part nobody advertises. A clever, sociable dog that is left alone in a flat for ten hours a day becomes a destructive, anxious dog. Goldendoodles are prone to separation anxiety, more so than most breeds, precisely because they are so people-oriented. If everyone in your house works long hours away from home, this is the wrong dog and we will tell you so.

They also need a job. Not agility competitions — a walk with some sniffing, a puzzle feeder, ten minutes of training a day. A bored Goldendoodle is an inventive one, and it will find its own entertainment in your furniture.

Good fit

Families with children. Somebody home for a good part of the day. First-time owners who will take advice. Households where hair on furniture is a problem. People who will commit to grooming.

Poor fit

Empty homes all day. Owners who want a low-maintenance coat. Anyone hoping for a guard dog — a Goldendoodle will show a burglar where the valuables are and ask to be stroked.

Living with a Goldendoodle in India

Almost everything written about this breed online was written for American owners in an American climate. Three things are different here.

Heat

From April to September, walk before 7:30am and after sunset. Test the pavement with the back of your hand — if you cannot hold it there for five seconds, it will burn paw pads, and roads hold heat long after the air has cooled. Never shave the coat to the skin for summer. The coat insulates against heat as much as cold, and a shaved doodle sunburns. A shorter clip is sensible; bald is not.

Humidity and monsoon

This is the real enemy, not temperature. A curly coat traps moisture against the skin, and moisture against skin means matting, hot spots and ear infections. In Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata or anywhere coastal, dry your dog properly after every wet walk — down to the skin, not just the surface — and keep the coat shorter through the monsoon. In Delhi's dry heat this matters far less.

Air quality

Dogs breathe the same air you do, faster and closer to the ground. On days when the AQI passes 300, cut the walk short and do enrichment indoors instead. This is a real seasonal constraint across the NCR from October to January, and it is one reason we tell Delhi buyers to plan for indoor activity, not just walks.

Grooming: the cost nobody mentions before you buy

This is where most Goldendoodle regret comes from, so we would rather say it plainly.

A Goldendoodle needs professional grooming every six to eight weeks, for its entire life. That is not optional maintenance you can skip in a busy month. Between appointments it needs brushing two or three times a week, with a slicker brush and a metal comb, right down to the skin.

Most owners brush the top of the coat. It looks fine and achieves nothing — the mat forms underneath, against the body, where you cannot see it. By the time you can see it, the only kind option is to clip the coat off and start again.

Budget roughly ₹1,500 to ₹3,500 per session depending on your city and the state of the coat, so ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 a year. Add a slicker brush, a metal comb and a decent dryer at the start.

Health, and what responsible breeding screens for

A crossbreed is not automatically healthier than a purebred. That idea — "hybrid vigour" — gets repeated constantly in Indian dog sales and it is only half true. A cross widens the gene pool, which helps. It does nothing at all if both parents carry the same problem.

Goldendoodles inherit risk from both sides. From the Golden Retriever: hip and elbow dysplasia, and a well-documented cancer risk in later life. From the Poodle: progressive retinal atrophy, Addison's disease, and bloat in the deep-chested Standards. Both sides contribute to ear problems, which the drop ear and curly coat make worse in a humid climate.

What you should ask any breeder, including us: what were the parents screened for, can you see the paperwork, and what happened to the previous litter. A breeder who cannot answer those three questions is not one you should be buying from.

Goldendoodle price in India

In India, “doodle dog” almost always means a Goldendoodle, so these are also our doodle dog prices.

We publish our prices. The number is on the site before you call, and it does not move based on how keen you sound.

What moves the price is lineage, documentation and generation — not coat colour, and not how rare someone tells you a puppy is. F1B litters generally sit at the upper end because demand from allergy households is steady and the litters are less frequent.

A note on cheap puppies. If you are quoted ₹25,000 for a Goldendoodle in India, something is wrong — either it is not a Goldendoodle, or the mother is being bred in conditions you would not want to see. We would rather lose that sale than match that price.

And remember the second number: grooming, food, vaccinations and vet care run to roughly ₹40,000 to ₹70,000 a year. The purchase is the smaller cost over a dog's life.

Doodle & Poodle is a direct, home-based Goldendoodle breeder in Delhi NCR, run by Rishabh Verma. We breed our F1B Goldendoodles ourselves, from our own parent dogs descended from foundation dogs imported from Russia, Ukraine and Southeast Asia, and every puppy is born and raised in our home in Patparganj, East Delhi. We are not a pet shop, a marketplace or an agent selling other people's litters.

Many of the websites and ads you see when you search for a Goldendoodle in India are resellers: they list puppies from many different kennels and cannot show you the mother. That does not make every reseller dishonest, but it means nobody can tell you how the puppy was raised. A direct breeder can.

How to tell a direct breeder from a reseller

• Ask to meet the mother, in person or on a live, unedited video call. A breeder can do this; a reseller usually cannot.
• Ask for videos of the same litter at different ages.
• Ask what generation the puppy is (F1, F1B or multigen) and who the parents are.
• Ask about papers. A Goldendoodle is a cross, so it cannot be KCI registered; anyone offering KCI papers for one is selling something that does not exist. We provide K9 pedigree papers and a microchip.
• Ask how the puppy will reach you. We hand-deliver anywhere in India with a member of our team, never by cargo.

How our litters are raised

Our puppies are born and raised inside our home in Delhi NCR, not in runs or kennels. They spend eight weeks underfoot with people walking past, the pressure cooker going off, the doorbell ringing, and other dogs around them. That is not sentiment — early exposure to ordinary household noise and handling is one of the few things that reliably predicts a settled adult dog.

You are welcome to visit and meet the mother before you decide anything. We would rather you did. If you are too far away, we will do a live video call with the dam and the litter, unedited.

Every puppy goes home at eight weeks or later, vet-checked, vaccinated, dewormed, with its records, and with a breeder you can still ring in two years.
