The commitment nobody explains before you buy. What it costs, how often, which clip survives an Indian summer, and the one brushing mistake almost every owner makes.
Most dogs shed. Hair grows to a set length, falls out and is replaced, which is why a Labrador covers your sofa and never needs a haircut.
A Poodle coat does not work that way. The hair grows continuously, like yours, and very little of it falls out. That is exactly why the breed suits households where dander and hair are a problem — and it is exactly why the coat has to be cut off instead. The trade is not optional and it does not go away. It is the single biggest ongoing commitment in owning a Poodle or a Goldendoodle, and it is the one most Indian buyers are not told about before they pay.

Metros sit at the top of those ranges, smaller cities at the bottom. Home visits cost more than salon appointments. A matted coat costs more than a maintained one, because it takes the groomer twice as long — and a severely matted coat cannot be brushed out at all, only shaved off.
Add roughly ₹3,000 at the start for a decent slicker brush, a metal comb and a dryer. Cheap brushes bend at the pins and stop reaching the skin, which is worse than useless because it feels like you are grooming.
If you take one thing from this page, take this. Brushing the top of the coat achieves nothing.
The coat looks fine from above while a dense mat forms underneath, against the skin, where you cannot see it — behind the ears, under the collar, in the armpits, between the back legs. By the time it is visible, the mat is against the body and pulling on the skin every time the dog moves. At that point the only humane option is to clip it off and start again.
Two or three sessions a week, fifteen or twenty minutes each. Do it while the television is on and it stops feeling like a chore.
Forget the show clip. It exists for rings, not for Chennai.
Short and even all over, usually 10–25mm. The sensible default for almost every Indian household, all year.
Same clip, taken shorter — but never to the skin. Easier to dry, harder to mat, still protects against sun.
A little longer over the back and chest in the north, where January nights genuinely get cold.
Never shave a Poodle or doodle to the skin. It is the most common piece of bad advice given to Indian owners and it is wrong in both directions: the coat insulates against heat as well as cold, and bare pink skin under Indian sun burns. A shaved dog is often hotter, not cooler. Ask for short, not bald.
Heat is manageable. Humidity is what damages these coats.
A curly coat holds water against the skin, and skin that stays damp develops hot spots and matting within days. In Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, Kolkata, Goa and coastal Karnataka this is a four-month problem rather than a passing one.
Keep the coat shorter from June to September. Dry the dog properly after every wet walk — a towel over the top is not drying, a dryer or vigorous towelling down to the skin is. Check the ears weekly and dry them; Poodles grow hair inside the ear canal, and a drop ear plus trapped moisture is the standard route to a recurring ear infection.
Not every Indian groomer can clip a Poodle coat well. Many are experienced with short-coated breeds and treat a Poodle as a shaving job. The difference between a groomer who knows the coat and one who does not is the difference between a comfortable dog and a bald, sunburnt one.
Ask three things: can I see photographs of Poodles or doodles you have groomed; what clip would you recommend for summer here; and how do you handle a matted coat. If the answer to the second is "shave it down" or to the third is "we just shave it", keep looking.
Find them before the puppy arrives. The worst time to be hunting for a competent groomer is when a four-month-old is already matting.
Every six to eight weeks, professionally, for the whole of the dog's life, plus brushing two or three times a week at home. That schedule does not change with the seasons. What changes is the length you ask for.
Roughly 1,000 to 2,000 rupees a session for a Toy Poodle and 1,500 to 3,500 for a Standard or a Goldendoodle, depending on your city and the state of the coat. Budget 12,000 to 25,000 rupees a year. A badly matted coat costs more because it takes longer, and a severely matted one has to be shaved.

You can and should do the brushing at home. Clipping is a different matter: Poodle coats need proper clippers and technique, and a bad home clip at best looks odd and at worst leaves clipper burn. Most owners are better off brushing well and paying for the clip.
