How your puppy reaches West Bengal

Kolkata is a straightforward accompanied flight, and Howrah, Salt Lake and New Town are a short drive from the airport. Kharagpur, Haldia and Bardhaman are road journeys from Kolkata that we can usually do the same day.

For north Bengal we fly into Bagdogra instead: Siliguri is close by, and Darjeeling and Kalimpong are a slower drive up into the hills. Durgapur and Asansol are reached by road from Kolkata or through Durgapur's airport at Andal. Malda we plan individually.

West Bengal's weather and a curly coat

South Bengal is humid almost all year, and Kolkata in the monsoon is one of the harder places in India for a curly coat. The coat does not shed, so it holds damp against the skin; that is what causes matting and ear trouble, not the heat itself. A shorter clip in summer and monsoon, brushing three times a week and thorough drying after every wet walk keep it under control.

The hills are the opposite story. Darjeeling and Kalimpong are cool for most of the year, and a Poodle can keep a full coat there. Siliguri sits in between.

Which breed suits West Bengal?

In a Kolkata flat, a Toy Poodle is the most practical choice: small, quiet and quick to groom and dry. A Goldendoodle works well too, and in Kolkata's humidity we usually suggest an F1 rather than an F1B. In Darjeeling, Kalimpong and the hill towns, a full-coated Standard Poodle is in its element.
